If you need a quick offline viewer, try to use KiCad 6 to import the PcbDoc file. Depends on you actual use-case if that makes sense for you. And today, the use of Gerbers as the PCB design file standard is being challenged. Some of this growth in design software has come from manufacturing companies accompanied by a native CAD file preference. A significant reason for this is the desire to improve upon Gerber files. Gerbers are in fact multiple files where copper, silkscreen, and soldermask information is given in individual files for each layer.

These typically have to be augmented by a pick-and-place file, drill file, board outline file, image, and a text file with descriptions and special requirements. CAD files, on the other hand, contain all necessary information for manufacture within a single file extension. Virtually all manufacturers accept Gerbers; however, they can be inaccurate and require conversion. Learn about the essentials for PCB design files.

Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of Gerber files. Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of CAD files. For designers, there are more programs to choose from which can be seen as an improvement.

Yet, an increasingly large number of the programs are sometimes offered by manufacturers to entice designers to adopt their design file format and use their manufacturing services. Typically, these programs are limited in functionality as they are targeted at a specific company. For most companies that specialize in printed circuit board design and not manufacturing, there are also native CAD file preferences.

One of the most popular of these formats is BRD. To attract users, Eagle is offered for free. Although, the BRD file format is popular it is not a format that is accepted by many manufacturers. PCB design today often involves many professionals and may require the integration of designs from multiple sources.

Then your design will go out to PCB manufacturing, and even more people will be checking how it was designed and if it will run through the PCB fabrication and assembly processes without problems. To give everyone the access that they need to work with you and your design, you need two things. First you need the ability to quickly and efficiently create detailed documentation for review and manufacturing, and second you need a PCB document viewer that can easily review all of the design files and documentation that you have created.

The first question that comes up is what kind of PCB manufacturer documents and drawings will need to be created? If you are not familiar with the entire PCB design process or PCB manufacturing requirements, you may be asking yourself the same thing.

Your PCB manufacturer will need an array of design files from you that may include Gerber files, bill of material files, Excellon drill files, fabrication and assembly drawings, pick and place files, and many others.

Here are some resources to help you become more acquainted with some of these file types. The Viewer License Request dialog opens. Using Altium Documentation. If at any time you would like to deactivate or remove the Viewer License, contact Altium Customer Support.
